The Toyota Corolla is the #1 sales vehicle in the world for the Japanese company. In the seventies, a twin-cam motor found its way into the engine bay of a Corolla. TRD (Toyota Racing Development) homologated an F.I.A version of the RWD Corolla for rally racing in the eighties. The Corolla AE86 (Hachi-Roku), with its potent 1.6L TOHC, became a legend\u2014the same engine powered for the Toyota Atlantic monoposto racing series and Drifting championships all over Japan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “86” spirit is still alive today thanks to the manufacturer making a sports car of similar dimensions and layout. The new 2023 two-door coupe is called a GR86, solidifying the long-time relationship with Gazoo Racing in Japan. I had the opportunity to drive this latest version. And it brought a smile to my face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toyota worked in conjunction with Subaru to create this car. The engine is the boxer 4-cylinder 2.4-liter twin cam that has proven reliable and powerful under Subaru’s WRX and STI models. The Toyota GR86 delivers almost 230 HP. That is enough to enjoy a quick drive through a mountain road. Why? Because the best part of this car is the chassis, suspension, and rear-wheel drive configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developed under chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, the new “86” debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011 as the FT86 and the first units were delivered in 2012. I drove the 10th Anniversary Edition GR86 (limited to 860 units). It comes in Solid Shift Orange color, a matte-black stripe and ducktail spoiler, 18-inch forged alloy black wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires, and a cat-back GR special exhaust system with black chrome tips. Additionally, the door interiors have orange embroidery commemorating this limited series Toyota. With a wider stance and a side vent at the front wheel arches, the car looks the part of a real sportscar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I immediately thought about where to go for its first run. Turnbull Canyon, Little Tujunga Rd., Latigo or Mulholland Dr.? Once on the road, you notice that the car sits low and the suspension is stiff for daily commuting. Not quite a race car, but over older roads, it can become quite bumpy. The Michelin wide and high grip compound is hard as well. But it all makes sense. Once you start pushing the motor to higher revs, and go through a succession of left-right-left corners, the car comes alive. Above 4500 rpm the engine wakes up, and it keeps pulling to the 7000 rpm easily. The base model comes with a manual six-speed transmission. This special edition comes with an automatic transmission that has paddle shifting. It may not be for the purist, but it is as good as a stick shift in performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car does not get tired, nor do the brakes fade, either. I was surprised by how eager this GR86 is to keep going without missing a beat. If you enjoy the art of driving, the AE86 is an even match for the Mazda MX5. Both cars are great for track days or early morning runs through your favorite canyon roads. The Toyota has a McPherson strut front suspension setup and a multi-link double wishbone system at the back. It comes standard with a Torsen limited-slip Differential (LSD) that gives you the confidence to press the accelerator without worrying about losing grip. The car weighs around 2825 lbs, and you can feel how agile it transitions from side to side. Several aftermarket suspension kits are available for this car, but the factory package is excellent unless you plan on racing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This GR86 is a four-seater car. However, the rear seats are just an excuse to comply with Japanese regulations and reduce the sales tax on the vehicle. The base model costs $29,750, and the 10th Anniversary costs $36,900. You get your money’s worth if you choose the latter version. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a few compromises with the car. The ride is stiff,  the road noise inside the cab can be annoying, and a touch screen tablet could be better. But the GR86 offers what very few cars can do today. It will make you part of the experience as you drive it. A vehicle that can handle corners with high grip and even let you slide a bit for plenty of engagement. It is a fun-to-drive and affordable sportscar for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toyota GR86 10\u00ba aniversario. <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

El Toyota Corolla es el veh\u00edculo n\u00famero uno en ventas en el mundo de la compa\u00f1\u00eda japonesa. En los a\u00f1os setenta, un motor de doble \u00e1rbol de levas entro al compartimento del motor de un Corolla. El esp\u00edritu “86” sigue vivo hoy en d\u00eda gracias a que el fabricante fabric\u00f3 un carro deportivo de dimensiones y dise\u00f1o similares. La nueva cup\u00e9 de dos puertas 2023 se llama GR86, lo que solidifica la relaci\u00f3n de tanto tiempo con Gazoo Racing en Jap\u00f3n. Tuve la oportunidad de conducir esta \u00faltima versi\u00f3n. Y me hizo sonre\u00edr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toyota trabaj\u00f3 en conjunto con Subaru para crear este autom\u00f3vil. Desarrollado bajo la direcci\u00f3n del ingeniero jefe Tetsuya Tada, el nuevo “86” debut\u00f3 en el Sal\u00f3n del Autom\u00f3vil de Tokio en 2011 como FT86 y las primeras unidades se entregaron en 2012. Conduje el GR86 edici\u00f3n del d\u00e9cimo aniversario (limitado a 860 unidades). Viene en color Solid Shift Orange, una franja negra mate y un aler\u00f3n tipo cola de pato, llantas negras de aleaci\u00f3n forjada de 18 pulgadas con neum\u00e1ticos Michelin Pilot Sport y un sistema de escape especial GR cat-back con terminales de los ca\u00f1os cromados negros. Adem\u00e1s, los interiores de las puertas tienen un bordado en naranja que conmemora esta serie limitada de Toyota. Con una postura m\u00e1s musculosa y una enorme ventilaci\u00f3n lateral en los guardafangos  delanteros, el autom\u00f3vil se ve muy deportivo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inmediatamente pens\u00e9 ad\u00f3nde ir para su primera prueba de manejo. \u00bfTurnbull Canyon, Little Tujunga Rd., Latigo o Mulholland Dr.? Una vez en la carretera, note que el auto sienta bajo y la suspensi\u00f3n es r\u00edgida para los viajes diarios. No es exactamente un coche de carreras, pero en carreteras viejas, donde hay mas pozos y desniveles, se puede sufrir un poco. Los neum\u00e1ticos Michelin, anchos y de alto agarre, tambi\u00e9n son r\u00edgidos. Pero todo esto tiene sentido. Una vez que comienzas a empujar el motor a revoluciones m\u00e1s altas y pasas por una sucesi\u00f3n de curvas de izquierda a derecha, el auto cobra vida. Por encima de 4500 rpm, el motor reacciona con br\u00edo y sigue tirando f\u00e1cilmente hasta las 7000 rpm. El modelo base viene con una transmisi\u00f3n manual de seis velocidades. Esta edici\u00f3n especial viene con una transmisi\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica con manecillas de cambio detr\u00e1s del volante. Puede que no sea para puristas, pero en cuanto a rendimiento es tan bueno como una caja de cambio manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El coche no se cansa ni los frenos fallan. Me sorprendi\u00f3 lo ansioso que est\u00e1 este GR86 por seguir adelante sin perder el ritmo. Si disfruta el arte de conducir, el 86 es el rival directo para el Mazda MX5. Ambos coches son fant\u00e1sticos para los d\u00edas de pista o para viajes matutinas por tus caminos de monta\u00f1a favoritos. El Toyota tiene una configuraci\u00f3n de suspensi\u00f3n delantera tipo McPherson y un sistema de doble horquilla multibrazo en la parte trasera. Viene de serie con un diferencial de deslizamiento limitado (LSD) Torsen que te brinda la confianza para presionar el acelerador sin preocuparte por perder agarre. El autom\u00f3vil pesa alrededor de 2825 libras y se puede sentir lo \u00e1gil que se mueve de un lado a otro. Hay varios kits de suspensi\u00f3n en el mercado de accesorios disponibles para este autom\u00f3vil, pero el paquete de f\u00e1brica es excelente a menos que planee seriamente competir con \u00e9l.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Este GR86 es un coche de cuatro plazas. Sin embargo, los asientos traseros son s\u00f3lo una excusa para cumplir con la normativa japonesa y reducir el impuesto sobre las ventas del veh\u00edculo. Hay algunos compromisos con el coche. La marcha es r\u00edgida, el ruido de la carretera dentro de la cabina puede ser molesto y la tableta con pantalla t\u00e1ctil podr\u00eda ser mejor. Pero el GR86 ofrece lo que muy pocos coches pueden hacer hoy en d\u00eda. Te har\u00e1 parte de la experiencia mientras lo conduces. Un veh\u00edculo que puede tomar curvas con gran agarre e incluso permitirte deslizarte un poco para lograr un mayor compromiso con el carro.
