The fundamental changes in the port drayage industry in CA, which require a total reorganization of the trucking business, must consider the possible peril to the businesses and communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CARB regulations have the best intentions to improve the air quality in many of the disadvantaged communities in the state. But the small companies, truck drivers, and the citizens indirectly involved and affected by the regulation must understand the why’s of the changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HMP President addressed truck drivers’ concerns in the Port of Oakland regarding replacing trucks with DPF (2007 EPA) with the newer 2010 EPA emission systems. Everyone must see the bigger picture and the reasoning behind new regulations. These are not to punish Diesel trucks but to find cleaner alternatives that minimize the risk of diseases caused by the pollutants from the vehicles’ tailpipe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community outreach programs need to come into personal contact better to explain the regulatory mandates’ pros and cons. This replacement cycle will happen again in 2023, and Zero Emission trucks will follow. The cost of all these equipment updates will increase, but the benefits will also multiply if we help everyone understand that there is a need to clean the air we breathe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HMP President, through his dealer involvement, was able to secure grants for eighty-two truck replacements serving the Oakland port. The work of Evaluating companies’ footprint and subsidies must be available to all. All the available solutions must be presented to companies so that they can continue the drayage business successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
